Origins and Legends
Onyx has been connected to lovers as it apparently caused discord and cooled the fires of passion. It was believed that if onyx was carved with the image of Mars, the God of war, that it would give Roman soldiers courage. It was once believed that onyx caused bad dreams and sad thoughts.

Onyx is in the species of chalcedony. It is very often cut with buff tops or flat tops and is cut into many shapes that are not always typical of gemstones.

How to care for onyx?
Onyx is not a very hard stone, even though it is a 6.5 – 7 on the hardness scale. It handles well in ultrasonics and steam cleaners and does hold up well to heat. However, too much heat may change the color. The surfaces of onyx are often polished very smooth so any scratch in the surface will be very noticeable so it is wise to remove onyx jewelry before doing anything that may harm the stone.
